The History of Essential Oils

The history of essential oils dates back to biblical times! In fact there are over 200 references in the bible including frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon, rosemary, among others.

Other historical references include frankincense being offered on the great altar of Belin Babylon, Diodorus of Sicily spoke of frankincense in Arabic, Napoleon used neroli as a cologne and the Crusaders brought back essence of roses (just to name a few).

Pretty cool huh? The history of essential oils goes way back. They may seem like such a fad these days, but the truth is they have been used for centuries.

The rediscovery of essential oils began in the 19th and 20th centuries during World War I. Civilian and military hospitals used aromatic essences. Then, a French chemist began studying essential oils in 1907. Then, during World War II, essential oils were used on battlefield injuries. Doctors at this time believed essential oils were saving lives!

In 1990, a French doctor and a French biochemist created the first reference book containing over 270 essential oils and their uses.

Today, many people use essential oils for so many things. While they can also be quite controversial, they are found in nearly every store these days. Diffusing essential oils are a great way to start using them as a beginner.

The history of essential oils is quite fascinating if you ask me! Even if incorporate herbs into your lifestyle, this is great way to live a healthier, more natural life.
