Essential oils can be used safely and effectively with your pets. Although there are some oils to avoid, there are other oils that can help. Essential oils for animals is a great alternative for many ailments.
Keep in mind, animals vary in size, shape and sensitivity, so use common sense and always dilute essential oils for smaller pets (as you would for smaller people like infants). As with anyone using essential oils, do not put them in the eyes or ears. Be careful with high-phenol oils like Oregano and Thyme, especially with cats. Cats also strongly dislike citrus oils, so be cautious of this.
For smaller animals like cats and small dogs use 3-5 drops of essential oils with a dilution rate of 80-90%. This amounts to 1 drop of essential oil per 4-5 drops of carrier oil.
For larger animals like large dogs also use 3-5 drops. Dilution is not necessary, but it is smart to dilute at first when it comes to anyone using essential oils for the first time.
For extra large animals like horses use 10 drops. Dilution is not necessary, but it is smart to dilute at first when it comes to anyone using essential oils for the first time.
A great way to start out using essential oils with animals is by diffusing them so that they can get used to them. Observe how they react and when they get comfortable.
For animals with paws, apply essential oils to their paws.
For animals with hoofs, apply essential oils on their spine or flanks.
You can add essential oils to your pet’s food too!
