Making the Switch to Sustainable Period Products

I started my period when I was nine…NINE! Now being in my 30’s and having had hundreds of periods already, you can imagine how much money I’ve spent on period products throughout the years. I was also diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) when I was 16. If I knew then what I know now, I would have thought more about making the switch to sustainable period products sooner.

I’m convinced that my exposure to toxins in many mainstream products as a child and teen may have contributed to my hormonal health issues. As a mom of two daughters, it is important to me that I make smarter choices for them and myself when it comes to feminine products.

Sustainability, non-toxic living and switching to healthier alternatives has always been my mission since I started this blog and became a mom. I’ve learned so much about how different ingredients and products out there have toxic effects on the female endocrine and reproductive systems.

In more recent years, I’ve switched to non-toxic cookware, clean beauty, natural cleaning products and non-toxic furniture, to name a few. But today, I am going to dive into sustainable period products, specifically pads, and why you should make the switch too!

Making the Switch to Sustainable Period Products

As a health and wellness blogger, I am so lucky I have the opportunity to try many health and wellness products. This time, I was introduced to Cariona and their eco-friendly reusable sanitary pads. I tried their trial pack and they are my newest favorite product!

Why Switch to Reusable Period Products

Although there are heather alternatives on the market for disposable pads and tampons, they still contribute to our planet’s waste. Many period products contain chemicals that are known to harm reproductive and developmental health, cause irritations and allergic reactions.

Common chemicals found in menstrual pads include:

  • Phthalates
  • VOCs
  • Xylene
  • Toluene
  • Methylene chloride

Benefits of Cariona’s Reusable Period Pads

When you make the switch to sustainable and reusable period products, you can save up to $5,000 or more over your lifetime that you would normally spend on disposable period products. You are also helping save the planet by eliminating unneccessary waste.

Cariona reusable pads are:

  • Organic
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Breathable
  • Discreet
  • Easy to clean

My Cariona Pads Review

When I received my Cariona trial pack, I immediately loved the cute patterns and waterproof pouch. The pads were neatly folded and fit perfectly inside the pouch.

The trial pack includes 1 liner, 1 regular pad, 1 overnight pad and 1 XL pad. I used all four over the course of my cycle and I am so excited to share with you how much I loved them!

Cariona Pads Review

As someone who usually leaks through a tampon and liner during my heavy flow days and while working out, I had absolutely no leaks with my Cariona pads.

I also normally try to avoid tampons except for when I have a heavier flow. I can go through a lot of liners in one day, but I have never liked the feeling of disposable pads and how they can bunch up and create unwanted odors. Instead, I used the Cariona liner and regular pad for my lighter flow days and then switched to the XL and overnight pads for my heavier days.

I even wore my Cariona XL pad to the gym! Yep! As someone notorious for those mid-workout leaks, I felt so much more confident wearing my reusable pad. I had no issues with adjusting, leaking or odors. This was a total win for me!

Reduce Waste and Save Money

If you are frugal like me, a person who is passionate about saving the planet or looking for safe, non-toxic alternatives, you need to try Cariona pads! They are not only great for periods, but for postpartum and incontinence too.
