Back before there were a lot of great all natural and vegan makeup brands on the market, I would make my own makeup and other beauty products from scratch including this homemade liquid foundation.
Back when All Natural & Good started 8 years ago, my go-to stores like Target didn’t have any better for you brands. When I was trying to find natural products to switch to, it was nearly impossible to find what I was looking for at an affordable price and without jumping over so many hoops.
I have been following the Wellness Mama for year and I came across this post on her blog years ago when I decided to try it out myself and write a blog post about it.
Have you seen the rating of your liquid foundation on EWG.org? If not, I suggest you take a look! Some women wear makeup (including liquid foundation) every single day! Most women are unaware of how toxic their makeup is.
If you haven’t figured it out by now, I like to make my own stuff whenever I can, including makeup! This recipe is really easy to make, it’s all natural and it works great!
Homemade Liquid Foundation
Ingredients:
- A container
- Unsweetened cacao powder
- Ground ginger
- Ground clove
- Ground sage
- Cornstarch
- Essential Oils: I like using Lavender, Tea Tree, Frankincense, or Geranium.
Directions:
This recipe is all about finding that sweet spot of the perfect shade for your skin tone. Each spice resembles a certain color. For example, ginger is yellow, clove is red, sage is green and cacao is brown.
If your skin is more prone to redness, perhaps a little more sage would help balance that out with the green. This recipe includes a face powder which can be made into liquid foundation with some added lotion.
- Add a little bit of each spice and cornstarch together, adding more of whichever color as needed to get the perfect shade. Test a small patch on your hand to see if it matches. What is great about this recipe is that you can always adjust the color, especially when your skin changes tone during different seasons.
- Add essential oils if you choose to use them. All you need is a little bit. For example, I used 5 drops of essential oils for 1/2 cup of powder.
- Add in lotion and stir to come up with the perfect consistency for your liquid foundation.
You can simply combine the powder and lotion as needed or you can create a tube of liquid foundation that is ready to go!

What kind of lotion do you use and how much?
Hi! This is really great and interesting. I don’t normally use foundation since I feel like it’s too heavy on the skin. But this one is natural and seems light on the skin. Just want to know how does it feel? And is it a light coverage foundation? Thank you! Really looking forward to try this soon 🙂
This may seem like a crazy question but do you just add 1 essential oil in the makeup or a combination of these oils?
Hi Lisa,
Not crazy at all 🙂 You can use a combo of essential oils if you’d like!
What kind of lotion is used? Also how much do you add? Thanks!
It seems many/most? lotions would add chemicals to an otherwise natural recipe. What kind of lotion would be truly natural?
which lotion do you use?? this question. keeps getting asked. So please just answer and put it in the recipe please
I am also curious on the lotion ???? seems to me, one just needs a creamy something to help spread the color. I’m wondering if something like coconut oil would also work.
